VFW Veterans Employment Priority Goals
2002

SUPPORT AN EFFECTIVE VETERANS’ EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING SERVICE

We urge Congress to provide sufficient funding to provide for a viable and effective Veterans Employment and Training Service which is held accountable in ensuring that veterans receive priority of service in seeking and maintaining employment and re-employment opportunities. We are also adamant that the Department of Labor devotes sufficient funding to ensure the enforcement of current statutes protecting the employment and re-employment rights of members of the Guard and Reserve

VETERANS’ PREFERENCE

We continue to strongly support Veterans’ Preference in the hiring of veterans at all levels of federal, state and local governments. We further urge the enactment of legislation to eliminate “designer” reductions-in-force which are carefully crafted procedures allowing for the circumvention of Veterans’ Preference in certain situations.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION

We support the standardization of licensing and certification be adopted nation-wide in order that recently or soon to be released service-members may immediately take qualifying examinations and not be required to undergo lengthy and expensive retraining when their military occupations parallel a civilian job requiring a license or certificate.

WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT

We continue to strongly urge state Governors to appoint at least one veterans’ advocate to the State Workforce Development Boards as well as the local boards to ensure veteran issues are addressed.

VETERAN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In order to achieve the dream of entrepreneurship, we prevail upon Congress to fully fund the Office of Veterans Business Development within the Small Business Administration. Veterans, Disabled Veterans, Reservists and National Guard members as well as soon to be released Armed Forces personnel must be afforded access to all programs and initiatives within the Small Business Administration.

HOMELESS VETERANS

We prevail upon the Congress to fully fund all Veterans’ Homeless Programs, which are administered at the Federal level. We also seek better dissemination of information by Federal agencies to the local level so as to enhance community-based efforts in assisting homeless veterans to once again become productive members of society.
